Sarah Gibson: Oklahoma Woman Fatally Shot by Estranged Husband Weeks After Filing Protective Order Against Him

OWASSO, Okla. — An Oklahoma mother who had recently accused her estranged husband of being a child predator was found fatally shot to death in her home, and investigators say her killer then turned the gun on himself.

Sara Gilson, 43, and Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, were both pronounced dead from gunshot wounds after a child who lived at the Owasso residence called 911. 

Officers eventually arrived at the scene, and after preliminary investigations, authorities confirmed that Duffey shot Gilson before taking his own life.

According to policr reports, the violent crime happened weeks after Gilson took emergency legal action against Duffey.

On June 10, Gilson filed an emergency protective order against him in Tulsa County, as per The Oklahomian

She reportedly told a judge that Duffey had a firearm, had “proceeded to threaten suicide and went on the run,” and she needed immediate protection.

Due to this, the judge ordered Duffey to move out of their home and stay at least 100 yards away from Gilson. That order was extended on June 23 and was set to remain in effect through Aug. 24, 2026.

The same day Gilson filed for protection, a separate protective order was filed by a woman on behalf of her 15-year-old daughter who was a player on a youth basketball team Duffey coached. 

According to the mother’s filing, another coach caught Duffey alone with the teenager, while he was kissing and touching her, as reported by PEOPLE

The girl later told her mother it was not an isolated incident. She said Duffey had sent her inappropriate messages, invited her to his hotel room during a tournament trip, and gave her money “to keep her quiet.”

That protective order was also extended on June 23, the same day Gilson appeared in court to explain why she wanted her own order to continue.

A little over two weeks later, on July 11, 2026, Gilson took her fears public after she jumped on a popular social media trend where users pretend to sit for a Netflix-style documentary interview.

She recorded a short TikTok video of herself walking over to an empty chair, sitting down, and facing the camera with her hands clasped and knees shaking. 

“Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile,” she added as text to the video, while The caption underneath said, “I wish I was joking. #plottwist #netflix #documentary.”

Twelve days after that post, the child in the home dialed 911, and the case Gilson had been building in court turned into a death investigation.

Gilson, whose legal last name was Duffey, had attempted to get court-ordered protection before. In 2021, she filed two separate protective orders against Duffey, but both were dismissed after she did not appear at the required hearings.

Owasso police have not released additional details about the child who made the 911 call or the current status of the separate investigation into the allegations involving the teenage basketball player.
