Elderly Man Cleared Of Murder Charge Against Him After Killing His Terminally-Ill Wife in Cyprus, But Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Her Death

In a heartbreaking case, David Hunter, a 76-year-old retired British miner, has been convicted of manslaughter for the death of his terminally-ill wife, Janice Hunter.

Janice, aged 74, passed away from asphyxiation at their home near Paphos, Cyprus, in December 2021.

The tragic incident occurred as she battled blood cancer, and her husband, David, made a devastating decision in response to her plea.

During the trial, Hunter denied premeditated murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

The court found him guilty of manslaughter, raising the possibility that he may not face a life behind bars.

The sentencing is scheduled for July 27.

Hunter tearfully expressed in court that he would have never taken his wife's life if she hadn't asked him to.

He described their deep bond, stating that she was not just his wife but also his best friend.

With immense emotional pain, he demonstrated how he held his hands over her mouth and nose and eventually granted her wish after witnessing her growing distress.

In the weeks leading up to her passing, Janice had repeatedly requested assistance from her husband, which escalated as her suffering intensified.

David shared his internal struggle and how he initially refused her request, hoping she would change her mind. However, as her emotional state worsened, he eventually relented.

Despite attempts to justify his actions, David faced prosecution for taking his wife's life without any common consent.

His defense team argued that it was not premeditated murder but a spontaneous response to fulfilling her plea.

As the trial concluded, the couple's daughter, Lesley Cawthorne, revealed the toll the ordeal has taken on her father. David is described as anxious, tired, and lonely, with his hope seemingly crushed.

The verdict came after a lengthy trial, and David Hunter's future now awaits sentencing as the court grapples with the complexity of a heart-wrenching situation.
