Grandparents Jailed Following The Tragic Death of Their 5-Year-Old Girl Granddaughter in Illinois

A devastating incident in the Chicago metropolitan area has resulted in the tragic death of a 5-year-old girl from Illinois, and her grandparents have been taken into custody, according to authorities.

The Park Forest Police Department issued a press release expressing their deep condolences to the family and friends of Jada Moore, the young victim.

Late on Friday night, a distress call was made to emergency services regarding an unresponsive 5-year-old girl at a residence on Osage Street in Park Forest.

Klent Elwoods, the girl's 62-year-old grandfather, made the call and reportedly confessed to abusing his granddaughter during the emergency conversation.

Upon arrival, police officers and paramedics immediately administered CPR to the child before rushing her to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital. Eventually, she was airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago.

Sadly, despite medical efforts, Jada Moore succumbed to her injuries the following morning. The Park Forest Police Department stated that the injuries exhibited both recent signs of physical abuse and older indicators, as determined by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities took Klent Elwoods and his wife, Lisa Jones, 57, into custody following their admissions of physically abusing Jada during interviews with detectives.

The evidence against the grandparents was presented to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, resulting in both Elwoods and Jones being charged with first-degree murder in connection with their grandchild's death.

The duo was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing in a Cook County courthouse on Monday. Details regarding the hearing's status were not immediately available.

Law enforcement has not disclosed the specific type of abuse inflicted upon the young girl. However, it was revealed that the house where the abuse occurred is now vacant, as there were no other residents besides the grandparents involved.

The biological mother resides out of state, and further information regarding the family beyond the household where the crime took place remains unknown, according to Park Forest Chief of Police Brian Rzyski.

This tragic incident has left the community mourning the loss of a young life, as authorities continue their investigation into the case of child abuse, seeking justice for Jada Moore.
