In a disturbing incident, an 11-year-old girl was subjected to an acid attack during an argument at a playground in Detroit last Sunday, as reported.
Deaira Summers, along with her siblings and cousin, was present at the Vernor Elementary School playground when a dispute broke out between her cousin and a 12-year-old girl, as stated by CBS News.
During the altercation, the 12-year-old girl's mother handed her a bottle of acid, which she maliciously threw at the girls.
Despite not being involved in the fight, Summers endured severe burns on her back, legs, and arms. In a state of agony, she hastily removed her shirt and fled towards her home while the corrosive substance ate through her clothing.
Summers recounted her horrifying experience to WSAZ, saying, "Two seconds later, it started burning and went through my shirt, my shorts.
I was screaming, and I was crying." Her family promptly rushed her to the hospital, where she received necessary medical care and remained under observation for three days.
The 12-year-old assailant, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been charged with assault and intent to cause bodily harm for dousing Deaira Summers, her cousin, and her siblings with an unidentified acid.
Summers' mother, Dominique, informed WSAZ that the hospital staff was unable to determine the nature of the acid used in the attack.
While the young victim has been discharged from the hospital, she continues to wrap her left arm and legs as she recovers from the traumatic incident.
Expressing her frustration, Summers stated, "I feel like there should be consequences because I didn't do anything to that girl," during an interview with the outlet.
Debra Golston, Summers' grandmother, emphasized that the girl was fortunate to have survived the ordeal despite suffering from third-degree burns.
The suspect appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Saturday and was granted a $10,000 bond. She has been ordered to refrain from contacting Summers or any other witnesses.
The 12-year-old is scheduled to appear in court again on July 18 for further proceedings.
