Family of Five and Their House Help Die in a Terrible Accident After They Were Hit By A Reckless Driver

A heartbreaking event took place in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. A reckless driver, who was driving against traffic, caused an accident which led to the death of a family of five and their house help.

The tragic event occurred on Sunday, August 5, 2023, at Umudibia community, close to the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri. 

The head of the family, known as Arthur or Agwu Oti Aka, was a disabled Para-Badminton Silver Medalist. He had plans to represent Nigeria in a Disabled Badminton competition in the United States on August 14, 2023.

The accident occurred as Arthur was riding a motorcycle with some of his children. His wife, house help, and other children were on two other motorcycles. 

Sadly, Arthur, his wife, and their 14-month-old child lost their lives immediately, while the house help and two sons succumbed to their injuries later in an Owerri hospital.

According to a neighbor of the family, Prince Mekoyor, the reckless driver, suspected to be intoxicated, veered off his lane and collided with the family. 

The driver was not the owner of the RX 3:30 Lexus SUV but had borrowed it to get money for purchasing drinks. 

After withdrawing money at an ATM on Aba Road, he lost control at Maternity Junction Polynek and crashed head-on into Arthur's family.

Mekoyor shared, "Arthur and his family were on their way home at 11:05 pm whereas the suspect was heading back to the joint after collecting money at the ATM. He left his right lane and rammed into Arthur and family." 

He added that another person on the same lane was also struck by the same car, leaving him and his family injured.

The State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the accident and stated that three individuals involved were receiving medical care at an undisclosed hospital.

Justina Opara, the Badminton Coach in Imo State, who confirmed the tragic incident, described Arthur as a dedicated individual who had represented the state and the country in national and international competitions.
