In a distressing incident at Gauteng's Dinokeng Game Reserve, a 30-year-old man fell victim to a lion attack.
Johannes Matshe, an employee of one of the reserve's landowners, met his unfortunate death on the night of August 13. His remains were discovered the following morning, August 14, 2023.
Reserve spokesperson Hartogh Streicher confirmed the tragic event on August 17, stating that the incident occurred as Matshe attempted to navigate the reserve on foot after dark.
Streicher reminded that walking within the Dinokeng Game Reserve during nighttime, or at any time, is strictly prohibited according to the reserve's regulations.
The discovery of human remains by the diligent reserve fencing team led to swift action.
The operations manager confirmed the unfortunate loss of life, prompting the immediate notification of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
An ongoing investigation is underway.
In response to the tragedy, Dinokeng Game Enterprises (DGE), the company responsible for the wildlife within Dinokeng Game Reserve, has applied for a permit from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE) to euthanize the three lions involved.
Michael Daymond, chairperson of a separate company overseeing DGE, expressed condolences to the grieving family.
Streicher emphasized the importance of adhering to safety regulations, highlighting that pedestrian traffic within the reserve is prohibited.
Exiting vehicles is only allowed in designated areas.
