Marine Charged with Assaulting Minor After A Missing Teen Was Found In A Military Base In Carlifonia
A Marine detained in June after a 14-year-old girl was discovered in the barracks of a California base, is now facing charges of sexually assaulting a minor.
Military police found the teenager at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton near Oceanside on June 28, more than two weeks after her grandmother had reported her missing to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
The Marine in question, as well as the teenager, remains unnamed by officials.
Additionally, the Marine is confronted with a charge linked to a previous incident.
Captain Charles Palmer from the 1st Marine Logistics Group stated on Friday that the Marine is charged with allegations of sexual assault of a minor and violating liberty restriction from a prior unrelated case.
Palmer also mentioned that after the preliminary hearing, a command review will be conducted to determine whether the case should proceed to court-martial.
Back in July, Captain Palmer had noted that the detained Marine was associated with the Combat Logistics Battalion 5, part of the 1st Marine Logistics Group.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, along with the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force, was collaborating with the Naval Criminal Investigative Services in the investigation, as stated by Melissa Aquino, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s department.
The girl’s grandmother reported her missing on June 13 after the child had run away from home four days earlier.
Authorities shared her information with various missing person databases, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Once located, the teenager was reunited with her grandmother.
