South African woman arrested for intentionally setting house on fire, resulting in the death of her seven-month-old child
A 28-year-old woman from Vosman, near Witbank, South Africa, has been arrested for intentionally setting her house on fire, resulting in the death of her seven-month-old child.
The incident occurred after a violent argument with her husband, who left the premises after the argument.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, set her house on fire around 3:00 am on Sunday morning, August 27, 2023.
The woman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Outraged community members attempted to take matters into their own hands, but the police intervened to protect the woman from harm.
The police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a case of murder. The charred remains of the infant were discovered in the aftermath of the fire.
The woman was somehow rescued from the burning dwelling. The accused woman is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, August 29, to face murder charges.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, expressed condemnation for the incident, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help rather than resorting to violence in times of social challenges.
The investigation is ongoing.
