In a shocking case from Oregon, a 30-year-old woman, Sharday McDonald, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for her abusive actions towards her 13-month-old son. The disturbing incident occurred in October 2021, but McDonald pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment in July 2023.
Police responded to a welfare check at McDonald's home in Gresham, Oregon, after receiving a report that she had placed her child inside a freezer.
When they arrived, they could hear McDonald screaming on the phone, expressing disregard for her child's well-being. It was later revealed that she was speaking to the child's father, Kendrick Neal.
Upon knocking on the door, McDonald opened it while holding her son in a blanket.
She claimed she had not intended to harm or kill her child but admitted to her actions, stating that she did them "out of spite." Disturbing images of the abuse were later reviewed by the arresting officer.
They depicted the child struggling to breathe as water was poured over his face and nose. McDonald reportedly told police that she had subjected her son to these acts as a way to "test" the father's reaction and see if he cared.
Prosecutors consulted with a pediatrician who examined the images and determined that the child had likely faced severe distress, and his life could have been in danger.
In addition to the 30-day jail term, McDonald will be on supervised probation for three years. It remains unclear whether she will have any contact with her child, either on a limited basis or not at all.
This disturbing case highlights the importance of child protection and the legal consequences of abusive actions towards children.
