81-Year-Old 'Grandfather', Frank Pompilii, Victim of Tragic Neighborhood Altercation While Trying To Help Resolve The Altercation

In a tragic incident that left the community in shock, an adored 81-year-old resident of Staten Island met a brutal end while attempting to intervene in a dispute among his neighbors. Frank Pompilii, affectionately known as the "grandfather" of his street, was fatally stabbed, leaving his neighbors deeply saddened by the unexpected violence that claimed his life.

The peaceful neighborhood of Sunnyside Terrace, characterized by its serene tree-lined streets and single-family homes, was shattered by a gruesome event that unfolded around 4:40 p.m. on a fateful Friday night.

Frank Pompilii, known for his friendly demeanor and harmonious relationships with everyone, courageously stepped in to mediate a confrontation involving three of his neighbors: Redzep (Richie) Cobaj, 78, Richie's son Skender Cobaj, 51, and Ramazan Ramusevic, 57.

Tragically, during this attempt to diffuse the situation, Ramusevic began a vicious attack, stabbing both Pompilii and Cobaj.

Police swiftly responded to the scene, discovering Redzep Cobaj outside, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Inside the residence, they found Ramusevic, still gripping a bloodied knife.

Quick action by the officers, including the use of a Taser, led to Ramusevic's disarmament and arrest. During his apprehension, he admitted to the stabbing, and Pompilii's lifeless body was discovered nearby.

Sadly, Frank Pompilii succumbed to his injuries at the scene, leaving a void in the hearts of his neighbors and loved ones. Redzep Cobaj, another victim of this senseless violence, remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Skender Cobaj, who valiantly defended his father during the altercation, sustained injuries to his hand.

Mourners gathered at the Pompilii residence, a place where Frank and his wife had raised two children and six grandchildren over their 56 years of marriage. As rain fell, a bird feeder gently swayed outside, a poignant symbol of the tranquility that had once defined this neighborhood.

In hushed tones, one visitor described Frank Pompilii as "our grandpa," reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him. He was cherished as an "old school Italian guy," a beloved neighbor known for his street-cleaning efforts and his warm-hearted nature.

Ramazan Ramusevic, the assailant, had a documented history of mental health challenges. Records showed a hospitalization for psychiatric issues earlier in the year, followed by a lawsuit in June seeking medical records related to an escape attempt from the hospital.

Remarkably, the only individuals Ramusevic appeared to have cordial relations with were Pompilii and Redzep Cobaj, according to neighbors who observed their frequent interactions.

The motive behind this tragic event remained a perplexing mystery, even for the investigating detectives. The community struggled to comprehend the senseless violence that had disrupted their peaceful neighborhood.

Police were actively considering charges against Ramusevic, although specifics were pending as of Saturday, leaving many questions unanswered.
