A 20-year-old Kenyan woman, Mercy Momanyi, is sharing her harrowing story of surviving a traumatic incident that changed her life forever, shedding light on a deeply disturbing episode.
Hailing from Mosocho in Kisii County, Mercy recounts the horrific events that transpired on August 23, 2023.
She alleges that her boyfriend, Sheldon Ombongi Okerosi, scalded her with boiling water during a heated argument, causing severe injuries. This incident also resulted in injuries to Mr. Okerosi's mother, Ms. Peninah Atemba.
After the shocking incident, Mr. Okerosi disappeared, later informing friends that he had returned to the United States.
In an interview with Nairobi News on September 18, 2023, Mercy Momanyi shared how their relationship took a dark turn when she discovered suspicious messages on Mr. Okerosi's phone, hinting at his involvement with other women. When she confronted him with her concerns, he allegedly became violent.
In an attempt to hide the incident, Sheldon physically assaulted Mercy and confined her to a room. After several hours, she persuaded him to release her, promising forgiveness. However, the truth eventually emerged when Mercy confided in Sheldon's mother, Ms. Atemba, about the altercation.
Sheldon, fearing exposure, confronted Mercy, accusing her of betrayal.
In a fit of rage, he purportedly poured scalding hot water on her and assaulted her further by slamming her head on the floor. Sheldon's sisters intervened to rescue Mercy and Ms. Atemba from the ordeal.
During the assault, both Mercy and Ms. Atemba suffered burns from the boiling water and were promptly rushed to Bosongo Hospital. Despite several attempts, Mercy was unable to reach Sheldon, who had gone silent after the incident.
Mercy's sister, Brilliant Momanyi, reported the incident to the Mosocho Police Station, initiating an official investigation recorded under Occurrence Book (OB) number 9/27/8/2023.
Ms. Momanyi shared that Mr. Okerosi's silence left her burdened with mounting hospital bills.
Friends and relatives, speaking anonymously, revealed that the couple had met two years ago when Mercy was studying Human Resource Management in Nyeri County.
Initially, Mr. Okerosi was known for his calm and humble demeanor, and former schoolmates expressed disbelief over his alleged actions. A friend remarked, "He was calm and always silent; I can't believe my former high schoolmate could do such a thing."
Several months into their relationship, Mr. Okerosi got a green card and relocated to the United States.
He convinced Mercy to join him in Syokimau, Nairobi County, promising to support her education. He even gifted her expensive items, as evidenced by her social media posts.
However, the situation took a horrifying turn on that fateful day in August 2023. Ms. Brilliant Momanyi revealed that they were advised to withdraw the police report if they wanted the medical bills to be covered.
It was discovered that Mr. Okerosi works as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Minnesota, with records showing no substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property, according to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).
Currently, Mr. Okerosi remains missing, while investigations into the assault continue.
