In Michigan, a 23-year-old woman is now facing hit-and-run charges linked to the perplexing death of another young woman named Mia Kanu, also 23. The tragic incident unfolded in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit, after a late-night party on June 3.
Authorities have now identified the suspect as Kenita Monique Fearn, who is accused of leaving the scene of the accident resulting in death and driving under the influence.
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, the law mandates that anyone involved in an accident must stop and promptly report it to the authorities. Leaving the scene when someone is seriously hurt or loses their life is a felony, and those responsible will be held accountable.
Reports indicate that Fearn was allegedly operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol with Mia Kanu inside.
Tragically, Kanu appears to have leaped from the moving car, which ultimately led to her untimely demise. Fearn failed to stop the vehicle and reportedly fled the scene shortly thereafter.
Surveillance camera footage also captured portions of the incident, as per law enforcement.
Southfield police have been diligently investigating the case, considering various possibilities, including homicide, in Mia Kanu's unfortunate death. Thus far, they have not released any information suggesting foul play involving Kanu being pushed from the vehicle.
In the wake of her daughter's tragic passing, Mia Kanu's mother made a heartfelt plea for answers during an interview with FOX 2 Detroit, emphasizing that something significant occurred, and someone out there possesses vital information.
The family is desperately seeking closure, as Mia was known as a caring individual who would never abandon someone in need.
On September 19, authorities took Kenita Monique Fearn into custody, and her arraignment was scheduled for later the same day.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years and a fine of up to $5,000. Meanwhile, operating a vehicle while intoxicated is a misdemeanor, with a maximum sentence of 93 days and a fine of up to $500.
