Former Texas Deputy Charged in Fatal California Hit-and-Run Case

A former Texas sheriff's deputy now faces charges in the hit-and-run death of a California man during the summer, according to prosecutors' statements on Monday.

Giovanni Ceja, aged 31, entered a not guilty plea in Riverside County regarding the incident on August 7 that resulted in the death of Gilberto Sotelo, as confirmed by the Riverside County District Attorney's office. Ceja is facing charges of second-degree murder and hit-and-run involving a fatality.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office had previously informed Fox News Digital that Ceja was visiting family in Riverside when the incident took place.

On August 6, he borrowed a family member's vehicle and drove to a bar. Authorities claim he consumed "multiple" alcoholic drinks before returning to a family member's residence. During this drive, he struck Sotelo, who was refueling his truck on the roadside.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office stated that Ceja did not stop to offer assistance and fled the scene.

Tragically, Sotelo lost his life at the scene. Ceja was arrested a week later in San Antonio, Texas, and subsequently extradited to California. He resigned from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office rather than facing termination, receiving a dishonorable discharge.

Meanwhile in  Tulsa, Oklahoma, a mother recently admitted in court to allowing her 12-year-old daughter to give birth to a child fathered by a 24-year-old man. See detailed story here
