Shandon Ray Groom, aged 30, hailing from Toledo, received a sentence of 17 to 26 years in prison. Timothy Eugene Moore, aged 37, also from Toledo, was sentenced to 20 to 55 years, in addition to pleading guilty to a felony firearm charge.
Both Groom and Moore were charged with the murder of Egypt Covington, a 27-year-old woman who was discovered dead in her residence in Van Buren Township, located approximately 28 miles southwest of Detroit.
Her hands had been bound using holiday string lights, and she had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, as reported by authorities.
A third individual, Shane Lamar Evans, aged 34, who had also been charged in connection with Covington's slaying, entered a guilty plea in April, admitting to second-degree murder. In May, he was handed a prison sentence ranging from 15 to 25 years.
Egypt Covington held the role of an account manager at a beer distributor and was known for her musical talents as a singer. In 2017, Arbor Brewing paid tribute to her life by creating a beer called "A Girl Named Egypt."
Meanwhile, another tragic incident unfolded as a police officer fatally shot an armed woman in northern Michigan while carrying out a search warrant, according to authorities. See detailed story here
