Tragic Accident: 13-Year-Old Pleads Guilty to Grandmother's Death in Sheffield

A 13-year-old boy has admitted guilt in the tragic case of causing the death of a grandmother, who was fatally struck by a car in Sheffield.

The young boy, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, made his plea via video link during an appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on October 3. He confessed to the charge of causing the death of 60-year-old Marcia Grant through dangerous driving.

The incident occurred on April 5 when the boy was just 12 years old. Additionally, he had previously acknowledged a separate charge of possessing a kitchen knife.

During his initial court appearance in April, it was noted that the police at the scene heard the boy make disturbing statements like "Is she dead?", "Looks like I got my first kill?", and "It was an accident, I swear." These statements raised questions about their implications in the context of the overall circumstances.

Describing the tragic incident, prosecutor Gary Crothers recounted the events to the youth court.

According to him, around 7 pm on the fateful evening, the defendant was captured on CCTV attempting to take Mrs. Grant's car. Mrs. Grant, attempting to prevent him, stood behind the car. The CCTV footage showed the vehicle being driven somewhat erratically at this point, eventually coming to a halt.

Tragically, Mrs. Grant was positioned behind the vehicle, and as it reversed, she fell, hitting her head on the ground. She became trapped beneath the vehicle, and her husband tried to break the car window to free the young boy.

However, the vehicle reversed at significant speed, resulting in catastrophic injuries to Mrs. Grant. Despite the arrival of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initially, the boy was set to stand trial this week on a murder charge, but he has now pleaded guilty.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 1.

In the wake of her tragic death, Mrs. Grant's family released a heartfelt statement, portraying her as a "warm, loving, and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend" and a valued member of her community.
