New Jersey Couple Charged with Extorting Elderly Man Who Died by Suicide

A New Jersey couple has been charged with extorting a 74-year-old Tennessee man for over $100,000, leading him to tragically take his own life.

Chinagorom Onwumere, 34, and Salma Abdalkareem, 27, from Piscataway, New Jersey, allegedly tricked the victim into believing he was in a romantic relationship with a celebrity. They then threatened him and his family through email, demanding money and claiming he was facing a fake sexual harassment lawsuit.

The terrified victim, fearing for his safety and reputation, paid the couple a total of $87,500 in gift cards and checks. Sadly, overwhelmed by the pressure and financial losses, he ended his own life.

Onwumere and Abdalkareem are now facing serious charges including extortion, financial exploitation of an elderly person, theft, and criminal impersonation. They were arrested at their home and transported to Tennessee where they are awaiting trial.

This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of online scams and extortion. If you or someone you know is being targeted, it's important to seek help immediately and report the incident to the authorities.
