Child Fatally Ingests Fentanyl at Mother's Residence; Dealers Apprehended and Facing Charges

Almost two years ago, a heartbreaking event shook Boynton Beach, Florida. A young baby girl, only 10 months old, tragically died after ingesting fentanyl, a powerful and illegal drug. This week, the people who allegedly sold the drugs to the baby's parents were finally arrested and charged.

The nightmare began in March 2022 when Kelly Ann Kirwan (pictured above), the baby's mother, noticed her daughter acting strangely and making unusual noises while sleeping. The baby's father was unfortunately away at work.

Worried and seeking help, Kirwan texted a friend about the situation, even sending video clips. However, precious time was lost.

Later that day, instead of seeking medical attention for the baby, Kirwan made a fateful decision and went to buy more drugs from someone named Samantha Yi. This critical misstep had devastating consequences. By the time Kirwan finally called 911, it was too late for the little girl. Medical examiners confirmed the baby's death was caused by fentanyl poisoning.

Police launched an investigation and discovered traces of fentanyl at the baby's home. This tragic discovery revealed a harsh truth: both parents were struggling with addiction to this dangerous drug.

The investigation took a crucial turn when detectives uncovered text messages on Kirwan's phone that detailed drug transactions with Yi. They also learned that Yi's boyfriend, Darnell Julio Mendez, was involved in the distribution.

Through a dedicated and lengthy investigation, authorities pinpointed March 30th, 2022, as the date Kirwan purchased the deadly fentanyl from Yi. This vital information led to the arrest of both Yi and Mendez at their home in Lake Worth.

Both individuals have a history of drug offenses. Currently held in jail, they will face trial in the coming days. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl, a potent drug with the potential for fatal consequences even in small amounts. The tragedy also highlights the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when a child exhibits concerning symptoms.
