More than two decades after a tragic shooting on San Antonio's West Side, a suspect is finally behind bars.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) recently announced the arrest of Jose Mejia, who is alleged to be responsible for the 2002 murder of Lee Roy Campos.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2002, in the 900 block of Angela.

According to SAPD, the shooting unfolded during a botched drug deal.

Three people, including a six-year-old child, were caught in the crossfire.

Sadly, Mr. Campos succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities immediately launched an investigation and identified Mejia as the prime suspect.

While an arrest warrant was issued, Mejia managed to elude capture for an astonishing 22 years.

The case, however, never went cold.

Determined to bring justice to the victim's family, SAPD continued their pursuit.

A significant breakthrough came in March 2024 when the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, took over the investigation.

Their combined efforts led to a crucial piece of information – Mejia's possible whereabouts in Mexico.

Working collaboratively with Mexican law enforcement, the task force successfully located Mejia in the city of Nava, Coahuila.

On May 4, 2024, Mejia was apprehended and transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

As of this writing, he is in custody at the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

This long-awaited arrest brings a sense of closure to the Campos family and demonstrates SAPD's unwavering commitment to holding criminals accountable, no matter how long it takes.
