Man Receives 15-Year Sentence Following Road Rage Shooting Death

Jacob Nathaniel Nevarez, aged 22 from Lodi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of causing a death in a shooting that arose from a road rage incident in August 2023.

He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and using a gun during the crime.

The tragic event unfolded on Interstate 580 near Pleasanton, where Nevarez, driving a white Nissan Cargo van, and 61-year-old Ryan Wood from Manteca, in a Jeep Wrangler, engaged in a dispute that escalated as they drove east towards Altamont Pass and Tracy.

The altercation culminated at Tracy Boulevard and Clover Road in Tracy, where multiple witnesses reported gunshots around 2:44 p.m.

Wood's Jeep crashed into a masonry trash enclosure following the gunfire.

Despite being rushed to a hospital, Wood succumbed to his injuries a week later.

Law enforcement used witness testimonies and data from a Flock automatic license plate reader to locate the Nissan van.

Police intercepted the van before it could reach Interstate 5.

Initially, Nevarez faced charges of murder and firearm use in the commission of a crime.

Another individual in the van was initially accused of attempted murder and shooting at a vehicle but was later released after charges were reduced to accessory involvement.

He received a two-week jail sentence.
