La'Rayah Davis |
A former NFL player was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for beating his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter to death.
He forced her to exercise because he claimed she was "chunky," leading to fatal injuries.
In April 2019, 5-year-old La'Rayah Davis died after being rushed to a Las Vegas hospital.
She was brought in with over 100 bruises, including 20 broken ribs and a liver laceration that authorities believe caused her death.
Former NFL running back Cierre Wood, who was dating La'Rayah's mother at the time, was arrested and charged with murder.
In April, Wood, who played at the University of Notre Dame before going pro, entered an Alford plea.
According to the plea, the defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him on various charges, including second-degree murder and child abuse.
Amy Taylor, La'Rayah’s mother and Wood’s girlfriend, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse.
This plea was part of a deal with prosecutors for a reduced sentence.
An investigation into La'Rayah’s death revealed details of the extensive mental and physical abuse she endured before her death.
According to reports, Wood would make the child undergo intense workouts as a form of punishment.
Police reported that he would make her run sprints in the apartment, do sit-ups, and perform wall squats.
Wood reportedly said he was “trying to get her on the right path due to her being chunky,”
On the day of her death, Wood made the child do sit-ups after she reportedly struggled to learn her letters and numbers.
Wood called 911, claiming that La'Rayah hit her head when she fell backward.
When authorities responded to his 911 call, they found her body cold and stiff.

Wood’s lawyer, Thomas Ericsson, claimed that Taylor was responsible for the abuse.
He claimed that Wood was not at home when it happened.
In July, Taylor was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder charge and eight to 20 years for the abuse charge.
