What began as a typical night for the Texas Tech Police Department quickly turned into a tragedy that would shock everyone
Hollis Daniels, a college student with a troubling past, became involved in a deadly encounter that resulted in one officer's death.
From College Student to Killer: Who is Hollis Daniels?
Hollis Daniels was a 19-year-old student at Texas Tech University.
But beneath his seemingly normal exterior, he was a young man struggling with addiction of various substances.
He had a history of drug use, and his friends knew about his addiction to substances like marijuana and ecstasy.
On the night of October 8th, 2017, Hollis got into a heated argument with his friends.
The tension escalated when he stole a gun from his friend Leo and even threatened him with it.
Sadly, no one could predict that the stolen gun would lead to the death of an unrelated person, let alone a police officer.
A Fatal Decision
At around 1:30 AM on October 9th, Hollis was pulled over by Officer Floyd East Jr.
This was after a call from his friend Leo, who reported the theft of his gun.
The encounter seemed routine at first.
Hollis admitted to arguing with his friends but denied stealing the gun.
The officers asked if they could search his car, but Hollis refused.
Lacking probable cause, the officers let him go, unaware of the deadly weapon hidden in his vehicle.
You can see the moment below when he refused to cooperate because he knew he had the gun with him.
Later that day, at around 5:59 PM, the police received another call.
This time, the call was from a student who heard a gunshot on campus.
Officer Floyd East Jr., who had encountered Hollis earlier that day, was dispatched to conduct a welfare check.
The situation escalated quickly when the officers discovered drugs in Hollis' dorm room.
As a result, Hollis was arrested and taken to the police station.
When Hollis arrived, officers searched him twice but failed to find the .45 caliber pistol that Hollis had hidden.
While alone with Officer East, Hollis retrieved the gun and shot Officer East who died instantly.
Hollis then fled the scene but took Officer East's body camera in an attempt to cover his tracks.
The Chase for Justice: A Campus on Lockdown
The shooting sent the Texas Tech campus into immediate lockdown as police launched a manhunt for Hollis.
The chase was on, and the entire campus was on edge.
Students were warned to stay indoors as police scoured the area for the armed and dangerous suspect.
After 90 minutes of intense searching, Hollis was finally apprehended.
When officers caught up with him, he coldly confessed, "I’m the one who shot your friend."
Hollis Daniels' actions on that fateful night left a lasting impact on the Texas Tech community.
The trial that followed was a stark reminder of the consequences of his choices.
In court, the evidence against Hollis was overwhelming.
The jury heard how he had concealed the weapon, lied to officers, and ultimately killed Officer East in cold blood.
His defense attorneys tried to argue that Hollis was suffering from mental health issues, but the jury was unconvinced.
In the end, Hollis Daniels was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Hollis Daniels will now spend the rest of his life behind bars, a stark contrast to the bright future he once had as a college
For Officer Floyd East Jr.'s family, the loss is immeasurable.
The Texas Tech community continues to mourn the loss of a dedicated officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
