The Shocking Discovery and Criminal Investigation
On April 2, 2023, crime scene investigators responded to an emergency call at 13114 South Post Oak Road.
According to police reports, a customer made a shocking discovery in the gas station's restroom, leading to the distress call.
They found the lifeless body of a baby, lying face down inside the toilet.

She reportedly spent approximately 15 minutes in the restroom before leaving, according to Click2Houston news.
Hours later, a customer stumbled upon the lifeless newborn and contacted authorities.

Surveillance footage showed Zavala Lopez arriving and leaving the gas station in a white Cadillac, providing criminal investigators with vital leads in the case.
Further analysis of the crime scene by detectives revealed crucial evidence that eventually led to Zavala Lopez's arrest.
Zavala Lopez tried to flee the country after the heinous crime, according to the Houston Police Department.
However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents apprehended Zavala Lopez at a Brownsville bus station on August 1, 2023.
Following her arrest, she was extradited back to Harris County to face charges.
During her interrogation, Zavala Lopez admitted to authorities that she was indeed the one who left the dead baby in a toilet.

Zavala Lopez's Trial and Sentencing
During the trial, her defense attorneys requested a lenient sentence, arguing that Zavala Lopez was unaware she was pregnant.
They explained that she had experienced sudden pain while leaving a party and decided to use the toilet at the gas station when she suddenly gave birth.
But Harris County prosecutors disagreed, saying Zavala Lopez could have saved the baby by calling for help.
“Zavala Lopez had numerous opportunities to save her child’s life, yet chose not to act,” one investigator stated during the trial.
The criminal complaint detailed that after the birth, she made no attempts to check the infant's vital signs or seek medical assistance.
She just cleaned the area using a mop, changed her bloodied clothes, and left the gas station like nothing occurred.
Additionally, crime scene analysis showed that she attempted to flush the baby down the drain, but it didn't work, as reported by KFOXTV.
"This case represents a tragic situation that could have been prevented through proper medical intervention," stated the presiding Harris County District Judge Kristin M. Guiney during the sentencing.
The judge's comments reflected the gravity of the situation and its impact on the community.
The four-year sentence includes credit for 489 days already served.
Local advocacy groups have emphasized the importance of knowing about Safe Haven laws.
They practically allow parents to surrender newborns safely and legally at designated locations without facing criminal prosecution.
Safe Haven could be fire stations, hospitals, or local police stations depending on your jurisdiction.
As the Houston community processes this tragedy, it raises broader questions about education, support, and the role of accountability in preventing similar incidents.
