For over five decades, the identity of remains found in a wooded area in New Hampshire, remained a haunting mystery—until now.
On July 9, 2024, the New Hampshire Department of Justice announced that the remains belong to Nancy Gale Erickson, a 21-year-old nurse who vanished in 1973.

She grew up in Elmira and earned her nursing degree from Corning Community College.
In her early 20s, she moved to Tampa, Florida, to live with her mother and siblings while she worked at Tampa General Hospital.
But in 1973, she abruptly left Tampa with just a duffel bag, leaving no trace of her destination.
Her family later speculated that the emotional toll of nursing may have contributed to her sudden disappearance.
However, months after leaving Florida, Nancy’s path took a worrisome turn.

On October 2, 1973, she was arrested in Vermont for stealing a car.
She told the judge she was heading to see friends in White River Junction, but her family had no idea who she might have known there.
After being placed on probation, she stayed in Brattleboro, Vermont, where she worked at the Brattleboro Retreat, a mental health hospital.
While there, she stayed at the Community House, which was a short-term housing facility.
Then, just weeks later—on October 30, 1973—she mysteriously vanished without a trace.
A year after her disappearance, in 1974, human remains were found in a wooded area of New Hampshire.
For decades, they went unidentified—until advances in forensic technology finally gave Nancy back her name.
"After years of work on this case, putting a name to Nancy Gale Erickson is incredibly meaningful," said New Hampshire State Police Detective Sgt. Kelly LaPointe.
"It’s more than solving a mystery—it’s restoring her identity and honoring the life she lived."
While her remains have been identified, the circumstances of her death remain unclear.
Investigators are now piecing together her final months, hoping to determine how did her remains end up in New Hampshire.
