Troy Lamar Fox: Long Beach Man Sentenced to 358 Years for Killing Teen Girl in Shocking Random Attack

A man from Long Beach, Troy Lamar Fox, has been sentenced to 358 years in prison for the murder of 17-year-old Briana Soto and the attempted killings of four others in a separate shooting.

The sentencing brings an end to a tragic case that has left a community in mourning.

Briana Soto

The sad incident happened on March 26, 2024, while Briana Soto was walking home from her job at McDonald’s near 11th Street and Lewis Avenue.

According to police reports, she was gunned down in what they described as a random attack.

Soto, who was a student of Poly High School, had just gotten off the phone with her mother, Ana Morales, and was just close to her house when the tragedy happened.

“She was so close to home that her mother heard the shots,” police said, according to the Long Beach Post.

When Morales called her daughter back after the gunshots, a man answered—but she couldn’t understand him.

Soto, who was looking forward to prom, her 18th birthday, and graduation, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but died three days later.

Tory Lamar Fox after he killed Briana Soto

Just two weeks after Soto’s murder, on April 9, 2024, Fox reportedly opened fire on a car carrying three minors and one adult near Pine Avenue.

Prosecutors say he fired 13 rounds at the fleeing vehicle but missed, as per Law&Crime.

Then, on July 7, 2024, police arrested Fox after finding him and a minor with six illegal firearms near 4th Street and Pine Avenue.

While he was in custody for that crime, detectives linked him to Soto’s death using DNA evidence and surveillance footage, leading to murder charges.

Fox’s ex-girlfriend, Tyrisha Hawkins, also identified him in security footage, noting his distinctive walk and the black, white, and red Nike Jordan 11s he often wore.

Fox’s violent history includes prior convictions for attempted robbery, criminal threats, and illegal weapons possession.

During his trial, prosecutors were not able to establish a motive for Soto’s killing, as both of them didn't know each other before the random attack.

At his sentencing, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said:

“Briana Soto had her whole life ahead of her... Today's sentence ensures the person who stole her future will never be free to harm another innocent person.”

For Soto’s family, the sentencing is a small measure of justice.

While Fox will spend the rest of his life in prison, the question of why he targeted Briana Soto remains unanswered.

The Long Beach community can only hope that Soto’s memory—and the harsh sentence handed to her killer—serve as a reminder of the need for justice and safety in their streets.
