Mark Labelle: Former Cedar Springs School Worker Convicted After His Wife Discovered Child Po*n on his phone

A former maintenance worker for Cedar Springs Public Schools is now serving time after investigators found more than 100 sexually explicit images of children on his laptop in 2024.

Mark Labelle, a 35-year-old former employee of the school district was exposed after his own wife discovered disturbing material on his phone.

According to police reports, the case started in August 2024 when Labelle’s wife contacted the Kent County Sheriff’s Department and made a report.

She reported that she found child sexual abusive material on her husband’s phone, as seen in the bodycam video below.

This led to a full investigation but when detectives searched the phone themselves, they did not find illegal material on the phone itself, according to WZZM13 News.

However, a forensic review of Labelle’s laptop revealed over 100 images of child sexually abusive material, and some of the files were later identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as known illegal content.

During questioning, authorities say Labelle admitted to having a pornography addiction and agreed to allow investigators to examine his electronic devices.

Labelle was formally charged in 2024 with aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material, a felony that carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $50,000. 

He was also initially charged with using a computer to commit a crime, though that charge was later dropped after he entered a no contest plea to the aggravated possession charge. 





His official sentencing hearing was scheduled for April 2025, where he faced 10 years in prison, and according to records from the Michigan Sex Offender Registry  he was officially incarcerated on May 30, 2025.

Cedar Springs Public Schools confirmed that Labelle did not work directly with students during his time with the district and said there is no indication that any students were involved in the case.

District officials stated they were notified of the investigation in August and immediately placed Labelle on administrative leave while the case moved forward.

In a public statement, the district said:

> “The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. Prior to employment, all applicants are vetted through a rigorous process of background checks and reviews. Continuous training and attention to student safety and well-being is an ongoing focus in our district.”

The district also encouraged anyone who may be a victim or who notices suspicious behavior to contact law enforcement or submit tips through approved reporting channels.
