In a devastating incident in Kansas, a 47-year-old man, Jeffrey James Exon has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.
He was found guilty of locking his 2-year-old daughter, Aurora Exon, in her room without food, leading to her tragic death.
Shawnee County District Judge Jessica Heinen handed down the maximum sentence of 683 months in a state correctional facility for the crime.
The heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded when authorities discovered that the man, Jeffrey James Exon, would frequently lock Aurora and her then-4-year-old brother in their rooms while he got drunk and neglected them for days.
The neglectful behavior continued until January 5, 2021, when a 911 call reported an unresponsive female toddler at their home.
Sadly, Aurora was beyond help and had been dead for several days when emergency personnel arrived.
The forensic pathologist conducting the autopsy determined that her cause of death was marasmus, a type of malnutrition resulting from neglect.
During the trial, witnesses testified about Exon's history of alcohol abuse and his alarming physical and mental state.
Justice was served when the judge found Exon guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, aggravated endangering the life of a child, and failure to report the death of a child.
