Man Jailed for Killing Woman in Stroud

A man, Joe Rankin, was sentenced to a minimum of 24 years in prison for killing Emma Potter, 40, who had cerebral palsy.

The brutal attack happened in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in September last year.

Emma's body was found on November 4, after police entered her flat due to concerns about her welfare. Joe Rankin, a drug user, confessed to his friend, Joshua Tucker-Bradshaw, that he was responsible for the murder six days later.

The court heard that Emma was physically vulnerable due to her condition, which made it hard for her to defend herself.

She had mental health issues and was sociable, making her family fear that people might take advantage of her.

On the night of September 20, Rankin went to Emma's flat and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest, stomach, arm, leg, and neck.

He later admitted having sex with her body after her death, which the judge described as a gross desecration.

Rankin returned to Emma's flat for about 90 minutes on September 28.

The police found signs of decomposition and multiple stab wounds during the post-mortem examination.
Rankin confessed to his friend about the murder and was arrested shortly after.

He accepted responsibility for the crime but had a history of mental health problems and was using drugs at the time.

Emma's mother expressed her grief in a victim personal statement, and Rankin was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 24 years before he can be considered for release on parole.

Detective Inspector Adam Stacey praised Emma's family for their bravery and poise during the investigation and trial, hoping the sentence brings them some comfort.
