Buried Alive? Woman Escapes Attempted Murder by Husband on California Beach

A California man, 26-year-old Jose Luis Mares III, will spend nearly two decades behind bars for a horrific attack on his wife at Coronado Beach.

Mares pleaded guilty to attempted murder and admitted to inflicting serious injuries during a domestic violence incident.

On February 24th, 2024, what started as a seemingly normal evening at the beach for Mares and his wife took a terrifying turn.

According to authorities, the couple became embroiled in an argument that escalated into violence.

Mares attacked his wife, leaving her badly injured.

The details of the attack are chilling.

Investigators believe Mares attempted to drown his wife by throwing her into the ocean.

He then tried to bury her in the sand, hindering her escape.

Thankfully, the victim managed to fight back and flee the scene.

A passerby found her on the sidewalk near Ocean Boulevard and called for help.

Responding to the emergency call, officers arrived at the beach and found the injured woman.

Paramedics transported her to a trauma center in San Diego for treatment.

Meanwhile, the police launched a search for Mares.

Their efforts were successful, and they located him hiding in the backyard of a nearby house just a few minutes later.

Mares faced several charges, including attempted murder, assault with great bodily injury, domestic violence, and false imprisonment.

In exchange for pleading guilty to attempted murder, prosecutors dropped the other charges.

Judge Michael J. Popkins of the San Diego County Superior Court sentenced Mares to 18 years in prison.

The attempted murder charge wasn't Mares' first brush with the law.

Court records reveal a prior felony conviction for carjacking in Los Angeles in October 2017.

This previous offense served as a "strike" under California's sentencing guidelines, contributing to the lengthy prison term he now faces.
