Sushi Staples Receives 2-Year Prison Sentence for Child Endangerment

In Rock Island, Illinois, a woman was sentenced to two years in prison for hiding her 10-year-old son's body in a garbage can.

Sushi Staples, aged 37 at the time, pleaded guilty to endangering her child's life on January 4.

This plea deal led to the dropping of three other charges: obstruction of justice, failure to report a child's death, and concealing a death.

Staples will receive credit for the time she has already spent in jail and will serve six months of supervised probation upon her release from prison.

The victim, identified as Zion Staples, was confirmed to be the 10-year-old son of Sushi Staples by Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson.

Shortly after the incident, a neighbor named Deb, who lived across the street, was shocked and couldn't believe what happened.

She said she couldn't sleep and prayed a lot, finding it hard to understand how such a terrible thing could happen so close to her home.

An autopsy conducted in Rockford on July 28, 2023, revealed that Zion had died from a gunshot wound, likely occurring in December 2022.

The discovery of his body months later prompted the arrest of Sushi M. Staples on charges including concealment of death and obstruction of justice.
