The Heartbreaking Case of Kirkland Warren: How a Bitter Ex-Boyfriend Claimed the Lives of a Mother and Her Child"
Kirkland Warren, who was charged with two brutal murders, has entered a guilty plea.
He brutally murdered Vancouver resident Meshay Melendez and her 7-year-old daughter, Layla Stewart in 2023
The plea came just days before his trial was set to start in Clark County Superior Court.
Warren admitted to the second-degree murder of Melendez and the aggravated first-degree murder of Layla Stewart.
Additionally, he entered an Alford plea for the sexual assault of Layla.
An Alford plea is a legal tactic that lets him maintain his innocence while admitting that there is enough evidence for a conviction.
Kirkland Warren's plea agreement means he faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
His sentencing is scheduled for October 8, 2024.
This decision has brought a sense of closure to the grieving family, sparing them the trauma of a prolonged trial.

On March 12, 2023, Meshay Melendez and her young daughter Layla were last seen in the company of Kirkland Warren.
Warren had previously been barred from contacting Melendez due to a prior domestic violence case.
Their disappearance was reported by Melendez's mother on March 18, 2023.
This was after she failed to reach them for their regular video chat session.
Authorities discovered their bodies four days later, discarded in a rural area near Washougal.
The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that both Melendez and Layla died from gunshot wounds to the head.
The community's reaction was one of outrage and sorrow.
Many questioned how Warren was allowed bail despite his violent history.

Kirkland Warren later met up with Melendez at the friend's house and they had a heated argument.
Warren and Melendez left and everyone thought the trouble was over.
The following morning, Kirkland Warren shot Melendez and left her body in his car.
He then sent a text from Melendez’s phone to her friend, saying he was heading to pick up Layla.
According official documents, he arrived there shortly after 9:30 a.m.
The friend, irritated by Warren's loud music, reached into the car to lower the volume.
She then found Melendez unresponsive in the front passenger seat, with clothing covering her head.
The friend initially thought Melendez was asleep.
As the friend tried to process what was happening, Warren yelled at them to shut the car door, according to the prosecution.
The friend then handed Layla and her kitten, Rocky, over to Warren.
Prosecutors allege that Warren sexually assaulted Layla before shooting her twice.
The next day, Warren drove from his Vancouver apartment to a remote area near Washougal.
