Mark Latunski’s Case: He Killed, Dismembered, and Ate some body parts of his victim, Kevin Bacon

In 2019, the murder of Kevin Bacon, a college student and hairstylist, sent shockwaves across Michigan and beyond.

What started as a holiday meetup turned into a horrifying story of violence and cannibalism.

This Michigan murder case raises critical questions about safety, justice, and the darker corners of human behavior.

Who was Kevin Bacon?

Kevin Bacon, 25, was a vibrant young man from Swartz Creek, Michigan.

He was deeply adored by family and friends.

He was known for his passion for hairstyling and his outgoing personality.

On Christmas Eve 2019, Kevin made plans to meet someone he had connected with on a dating app, Grindr.

When he failed to show up for Christmas breakfast, his family immediately knew something was wrong.

Karl Bacon, Kevin’s father, told local news that “Kevin was someone who cared deeply about people. It wasn’t like him to disappear without a word.”

Tragically, Kevin’s disappearance led to a search that uncovered a horrifying crime and the name Mark Latunski.

Who is Mark Latunski?

The man Kevin was supposed to meet that tragic Christmas Eve was Mark Latunski, an individual with a deeply troubling past.

Latunski was a 50-year-old chemist from Shiawassee County, Michigan.

He had a history of mental health struggles and erratic behavior that had raised red flags long before the murder.

Court documents later revealed that Latunski had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and had a history of failing to adhere to treatment plans.

Also, during a custody dispute, his ex-wife cited his unstable mental health as a significant concern.

Despite these red flags, there was no intervention strong enough to prevent the events that would later unfold.

What Happened to Kevin Bacon?

After connecting on a dating app, Kevin Bacon traveled to meet Mark Latunski at his home in Shiawassee County, Michigan.

According to court documents, what transpired that evening was unimaginable.

Mark Latunski confessed to stabbing Kevin in the back, slitting his throat, and hanging his body upside down in the basement.

The case became even more horrifying when Latunski admitted to dismembering Kevin’s body and consuming parts of it.

How did police discover Kevin Bacon's body? : The Investigation

When Kevin Bacon failed to return home, his family reported him missing, prompting a police investigation.

Authorities quickly traced his last known whereabouts through the dating app messages.

This led them to Mark Latunski’s home.

On December 28, 2019, police executed a welfare check at Latunski’s residence.

What they discovered was a gruesome scene.

Kevin’s mutilated body was found hanging in the basement with blood everywhere.

Latunski was immediately taken into custody where he confessed to the murder

You can see his full interrogation video below.

What was Mark Latunski’s Motive?

Mark Latunski’s reason for killing Kevin Bacon is both complicated and deeply unsettling.

By his own admission, his actions were driven by serious mental health issues and disturbing fantasies.

Mark Latunski claimed that killing Kevin was part of a ritual meant to keep him safe.

He also confessed to cannibalistic acts and revealed a disturbing fixation on consuming human flesh.

The prosecuting lawyers argued that this obsession was part of his gruesome and premeditated plan.

They pointed out that while mental illness likely played a role, Latunski’s ability to plan and execute the murder with such precision suggests deeper, more sinister motives.

“This wasn’t a random act; it was a calculated crime fueled by his dark desires and delusions,” one prosecutor said.

Justice for Kevin Bacon

Despite the mental health argument, the court ultimately determined that Mark Latunski was competent to stand trial.

As a result, he was held fully accountable for the horrific murder of Kevin Bacon.

In 2022, Mark Latunski entered an open murder plea, which allowed the court to determine whether his actions constituted first-degree or second-degree murder.

Mark Latunski also pleaded guilty to body mutilation, leaving no doubt about his role in Kevin Bacon’s death.

In the end, the court sentenced Latunski to life in prison without parole.

The verdict brought a sense of closure to Kevin’s grieving family and the broader community.

While speaking to local news, Kevin’s father said, “Nothing can bring Kevin back, but we hope this verdict ensures no one else will ever have to suffer like this.”
