According to Huffpost, VanLuven was caught on a nanny camera engaging in a lewd act with a child’s Tickle Me Elmo doll during a routine home inspection.
This unsettling event shocked homeowners and law enforcement alike, sparking national attention.
Let's get into it
A Disturbing Discovery
On March 12, 2021, Kevin Wayne VanLuven, 59, entered an Oxford Township home for an inspection.
The Homeowners Jaida Dodson and her husband were preparing to move at the time.
As a result, they hired Kevin Wayne VanLuven through his company to perform a home inspection.
After Kevin arrived, the homeowners temporarily left the premises so that he could do his job.
Shockingly, just a few minutes later, Jaida received a motion alert from the nanny camera in their two-year-old son's nursery.
This prompted her to check the live feed on her phone and what she witnessed left her speechless.
VanLuven was not only masturbating but also using her son’s Elmo doll during the act, as reported by Huffpost.
"I just went blank," Jaida later shared, recalling her disbelief.
"My husband kept asking what was wrong, but I couldn’t even articulate what I was seeing."
Jaida immediately called the local police department, who arrived on the scene to confront VanLuven.
Initially, he claimed he had moved the doll to inspect an electrical outlet.
However, after being informed about the camera, VanLuven confessed, saying he was ashamed of his actions.
Legal Proceedings and Conviction
Kevin VanLuven was arrested and charged with aggravated indecent exposure and malicious destruction of property under $200.
The latter charge stemmed from his actions which rendered the doll unusable.
In October 2022, during a one-day trial, a jury convicted him of indecent exposure while acquitting him of property destruction.
He faced up to two years in prison and a $2,000 fine for his actions.
On January 12, 2023, Oakland County Circuit Judge Phyllis McMillen sentenced VanLuven to 19 days in jail with 19 days' credit, 18 months of probation, and ongoing mental health treatment.
During sentencing, Kevin VanLuven apologized to both the Dodson family and his own, expressing deep regret for the "trauma and violation" he caused.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard expressed his disgust, calling the incident a "disgusting reminder to be cautious about who you let into your home."
He praised the Dodson family's quick actions, saying they likely prevented VanLuven from victimizing others.
Authorities also urged homeowners to invest in nanny cameras or security systems to monitor their homes during inspections or other professional visits.
