In Georgia, two men have been arrested and charged with the horrific murder and dismemberment of their roommate, who was a U.S. Army veteran.
According to The Taos County Sheriff’s Office, the details uncovered so far are disturbing and heartbreaking.
The three men involved in this case first met while serving in the same unit at Fort Benning, Georgia.
However, what started as a military bond ended in an unimaginable betrayal.
It all began on July 31, 2025, when 25-year-old Matthew McLaughlin was reported missing.
As detectives looked his disappearance, they quickly identified his two roommates, Rainor Joiner, 23, and David Degroat, 22, as prime suspects.
They were arrested and brought in for questioning, and that was when Joiner allegedly confessed to the killing.
"[Joiner] admitted he shot the individual with a rifle and then again with a pistol then subsequent days later he continued to dismember the victim, " said Taos County Undersheriff Gabriel Ortiz.
“The individual was very much non-remorseful. No emotions, just a kind of blank face and told them [deputies] exactly what he did and didn't have any emotions at all,” he added.
Infact after his arrest, Joiner allegedly told criminal investigators that “I did it, I f****** him, and I don’t f****** regret it,”
Authorities believe the violent crime occurred on July 25, 2025.
Joiner claimed that he killed McLaughlin because he had been spreading rumors about him that he was using drugs, and bringing strangers into their home.
According to police reports, Joiner and Degroat ambushed McLaughlin in the alleged attack which was brutal.
Degroat reportedly told police that Joiner shot their roommate three times as they walked along a road to their house.
The suspects then reportedly dismembered the victim's body in the days that followed, as per KOB News
Degroat later claimed that Joiner forced him to hold open a bag while he placed the body parts inside.
After their confession, Joiner allegedly led deputies to where they had discarded the remains: plastic bags tossed along U.S. Highway 64, near the area of Tres Piedras.
The human remains found there were later positively identified as those of Matthew McLaughlin.
As the legal proceedings begin for Joiner and Degroat, who both face charges of first-degree murder and other felonies, those who knew Matthew McLaughlin are left to remember the man he was.
Friends and loved ones have described him as a “sweet, kind person,” whose murder “doesn’t make sense.”
They shared that McLaughlin, a West Virginia native, had left his family to travel across the country with these two friends, hoping to make a fresh start in New Mexico.
This act of trust makes the alleged premeditated murder even more difficult for them to comprehend.
Authorities have confirmed that McLaughlin's family has been notified, according to Independent News.
Meanwhile, both Joiner and Degroat were allegedly not just former soldiers, but were wanted by the Army on active warrants for desertion.
“It was kind of a shock you know, you start working these kind of cases and have a gut feeling in the way that the case is leading, but you never expect the way this kind of unfolded,” said Undersheriff Ortiz
