20-Year-Old Faces Charges in Kidney Harvesting Case After Luring a 17-year-old To Sell His Kidney Without His or His Parent's Consent
A 20-year-old individual, Aondoaseer Agbadu, found himself facing charges in a Makurdi Magistrate's Court in Benue State, Nigeria. His alleged crime involved harvesting and selling the kidney of a 17-year-old boy named Terungwa Swati in Abuja.
The Benue State Police Command brought Agbadu to court on September 14, 2023, on charges related to conspiracy in organ harvesting. According to the allegations, Agbadu and his associates lured Terungwa to Abuja, where they secretly harvested one of his kidneys without his or his parents' consent.
The other individuals implicated in this case had reportedly fled when the victim's father reported the incident to the Aliade police station in Gwer East Local Government Area.
During the court proceedings on September 14, Inspector Godwin Ato, the police prosecutor, explained that Alexander Swati, from the Benue Internal Revenue Service office in Aliade, reported the case on August 27.
Subsequently, the case was transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Aliade to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi.
The prosecutor detailed that in April 2023, Aondoaseer Agbadu, located opposite Union Bank in Aliade, conspired with others who are now on the run. Together, they deceived and transported 17-year-old Terungwa Swati to Abuja, where they conducted an unauthorized kidney removal surgery and sold the organ to another individual.
Inspector Ato clarified that Agbadu had been apprehended during the police investigation, but the remaining suspects remained at large.
The charges against Agbadu pertained to Sections 27 and 20 (1), (2), and (3) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. The investigation was ongoing, and additional time was requested to complete it.
However, due to jurisdictional constraints, no plea was entered.
The Magistrate, Mr. Taribo Atta, ordered the accused to be remanded at the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre in Makurdi and scheduled the case for further mention on October 23.
