A current officer of the Metropolitan Police is facing charges of rape and making threats to kill following an incident in which a woman was assaulted and forcibly placed into a vehicle.
Scotland Yard disclosed that 23-year-old Police Constable Cliff Mitchell will be appearing in court to face six rape allegations, one count of making threats to kill, and one breach of a non-molestation order.
The investigation was initiated after a concerned member of the public reported the discovery of a distressed woman in Hackbridge, located in southwest London, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the woman had been attacked within a property and subsequently forced into a car.
It's important to note that Mitchell was not on duty at the time of the incident.
He was charged on Thursday.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy expressed his concern about the serious allegations, emphasizing the support provided to the victim by trained officers.
The Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards is actively investigating the case.
The arrest of a serving police officer for such grave offenses is deeply troubling and is expected to raise significant concerns within the communities of London.
An immediate referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made.
Cliff Mitchell is affiliated with the Metropolitan Police's West Area Basic Command Unit and will make his court appearance in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
He has been suspended from duty.
The police did not provide an address for Mitchell in their statement announcing the charges.
In another news, the FBI has offered a reward of $10,000 to any information that will lead to the capture of a homicide suspect who escaped from custody. See detailed story here.
