In Memphis, Tennessee, a man is facing serious charges, including second-degree murder, following a tragic incident in which he allegedly used a hammer to beat another man to death, all while claiming it was an act of self-defense.
The Memphis Police Department responded to a distress call on Monday afternoon around 2:52 p.m. in North Memphis. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered an unresponsive victim lying on the ground inside a residence.
The victim, identified as John Doe, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner's assessment revealed unmistakable evidence of blunt force trauma to John Doe's body.
Interestingly, two other individuals, Dewry Wesley and Darrius Woods, were also found inside the residence alongside John Doe's lifeless body.
The chain of events leading to this tragic incident began earlier that morning when Woods accused Wesley of consuming his crack cocaine in the company of some females. This dispute escalated when Woods physically assaulted Wesley with a stick, resulting in injuries to Wesley's head, face, and hand.
Following this initial altercation, Wesley retired to sleep but was abruptly awakened between 6 and 7 a.m. His rude awakening was caused by the sight of John Doe assaulting Woods with a hammer.
In a horrifying turn of events, Woods managed to disarm John Doe, taking the hammer into his own hands and relentlessly beating John Doe across his body. John Doe desperately pleaded with Woods to stop, but Woods merely paused to retrieve a large stick, continuing his brutal assault.
This ordeal left John Doe severely injured, including facial injuries inflicted by Woods' kicks.
In a shocking twist, Wesley and Woods returned to their slumber, leaving John Doe lying on the ground, in visible pain. Upon waking again, they found John Doe unresponsive and in distress.
Neighbors, who had been witnesses to the disturbing events, provided crucial information to the police.
One neighbor disclosed that around 8 a.m., he heard John Doe's desperate pleas for his life, followed by ominous threats from Woods. Another neighbor reported that around 10 a.m., Woods requested his assistance in examining John Doe's injuries and subsequently asked him to call for an ambulance.
It wasn't until 2:30 p.m. that Woods allegedly confided in the first neighbor, claiming that he had been attacked by John Doe earlier that morning, explaining the earlier commotion. Woods then asked the neighbor to call for an ambulance due to John Doe's unresponsiveness.
Upon investigating the scene, authorities discovered both a hammer and a broken stick, leading to the arrest of Darrius Woods.
Woods is now facing serious charges, including Aggravated Assault and Second-Degree Murder, and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
