Angelina Tran : Washington College Student Stabbed Over 100 Times While Trying to Save Her Mother from Stepfather
She was stabbed over 100 times when she tried to protect her mother.
Angelina Tran, 21, woke up early on August 7, 2023, to see her 54-year-old stepfather, Nghiep Kein Chau, hitting her mother in the face.
This happened at their home in Seattle's Beacon Hill neighborhood, according to the police.
When Tran tried to step in, her stepfather started attacking her instead.
This gave her mother time to escape and run downstairs to call 911.
Tran and her stepfather kept fighting until they both fell near a dog kennel.
Chau then dragged Tran, who was lying on the kennel, toward the kitchen and picked up a knife.
Chau repeatedly stabbed Tran as she tried to defend herself, and he kept stabbing her even after she showed no signs of life.
She continued to try and fight [Chau] off, and at times turned her back toward him, which led to her being stabbed in the back.
Chau paused the attack on Tran several times.
He changed his clothes, got a meat cleaver to replace the knife, and looked for his wife before he started stabbing Tran again.
Angelina Tran's attempt to help allowed her mother to escape and hide in a nearby bedroom as Chau continued his attack.
The initial attack on Tran's mother and Tran's own stabbing were captured on a home surveillance camera.
It showed how Chau paused to “change clothes because of all the blood” and to “select a different knife (a meat cleaver) from the kitchen drawer” before he continued stabbing Tran.
Seattle police arrived at the house around 5 a.m. and found Chau covered in blood, holding a large bloody kitchen knife.
He then told the police, "I killed somebody," according to the charging document.
Tran was declared dead at the scene after being stabbed 107 times in the torso.
Her mother was immediately taken to the hospital for her injuries.
Chau was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder for the attacks.
He is being held at the King County Correctional Facility with a $5,000,000 bail.
Chau told police that he began arguing with his wife about money in the living room and that he hit her in the face because he was angry.
He explained that he thought his wife would divorce him and take his money, even though she had never said this to him.
He just believed it to be true, according to official documents.
The initial arraignment was postponed because Chau is “medically unavailable,” according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Tran, who is described as “an incredible daughter, a cherished friend, and above all, a perfect girlfriend.”
The page notes that she was dedicated to “making a difference in the lives of elderly individuals.”
She did really well in her studies and had just one more year left at the University of Washington, Seattle.
Her dedication and hard work were truly impressive.
Her absence is deeply felt because she was a wonderful person, and she had a big impact on everyone who knew her.
