A woman from Chicago was sentenced to 58 years in prison for killing her landlord and cutting up her body in an apartment in West Rogers Park almost two years ago.
Sandra Kolalou received 50 years for the murder, six years for dismembering the body, and two years for stealing the victim's identity.
Kolalou was found guilty of killing her 69-year-old landlord, Frances Walker.
She was convicted on all charges, including first-degree murder and hiding the body, on April 22, 2024.
On October 10, 2022, Chicago police searched a home where 36-year-old Kolalou rented a room.
They found Walker’s head, arms, and legs inside a kitchen freezer, officials said.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022, tenants in a home on the 5900 block of North Washtenaw Avenue heard screaming.
They tried texting and calling their landlord, Frances Walker, to make sure everything was OK, but she didn't pickup.
Later in the day around 6 or 7 p.m., after not being able to contact Walker all day, the tenants called the police to report a missing person.
When officers arrived, Kolalou was leaving the home and heading to a tow truck she had called and paid for using Walker's credit card
Kolalou wanted the tow truck driver to take her to her car at Foster Beach so it could be towed to a mechanic.
Officers searched the residence and at first did not find evidence of foul play.
However, after finding bloody rags in the trash can at the beach, officers searched again and found blood inside Kolalou's room.
It was during this second search that officers discovered some of Walker's remains inside a freezer in the home.
Based on preliminary evidence, detectives believe Walker was killed in her bedroom and dismembered on the first floor of the residence.
When asked why no other tenants saw Walker being dismembered, the Chicago Police explained:
"The house is set up with a couple of apartments on the top floor. The victim and Sandra lived on the same floor, and there was another tenant in the basement. Each apartment had deadbolts for privacy," said the Chicago Police Chief.
Vigilant Neighbors
The residents were very cooperative.
When they heard the scream and woke up in the morning, they started texting and calling the victim right away, but she didn't answer.
Some texts were sent back from the victim's phone, but it seems the defendant was the one sending those texts and not answering the calls
Prosecutors said that right before Walker was last seen, she was heard arguing with Kolalou about an eviction notice.
However, Kolalou's lawyer, Sean Brown, said this was impossible because Kolalou was seen on surveillance video at a birthday party at a hotel in Warrenville when the argument supposedly happened.
Police were called to the apartment multiple times by tenants about the welfare of Walker, who shared the unit with Kolalou, but left each time for lack of evidence of a crime.
The tenants in the building were very worried after they didn't hear from the home owner.
So they followed Kolalou to Foster Beach after she called a tow truck to take her car from a parking lot there to a mechanic.
They saw her throw a garbage bag into a trash container, which was later found to have bloody rags inside.
Kolalou was arrested after allegedly threatening the tow truck driver with a knife. He refused to move her car when the mechanic wouldn't service it, and he called the police, who were nearby.
However, her lawyers said the tow truck driver told reporters he didn't see a knife.
He assumed she had one because he was scared after hearing from tenants and police that she might have harmed Walker.
Her lawyers said in the absence of a threat, police had no probable cause to arrest Kolalou for the alleged threat.
