On Sunday, Plantation police made a surprising announcement.
They revealed that the remains found in a canal belong to a mother and her young daughter who disappeared fifty years ago.
The tragic case involves a 35-year-old woman and her 3-year-old daughter.
They went missing from their home at 13411 NW 2nd St. in Plantation in 1974.
At the time of their disappearance, the woman's 1961 Chevrolet Impala was also unaccounted for, according to law enforcement.
Their case soon went cold, with investigations lasting for decades.
By 1975, it was officially considered a cold case.
Despite many follow-ups over the years in 1977, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2018, the search found nothing, and the two were never located.
In June 2023, Sunshine State Sonar, a volunteer group that searches for missing persons and vehicles in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, worked with Plantation Police to reopen the case.
Their teamwork paid off on Sunday when the sonar team found a vehicle in a canal near 10100 West Broward Boulevard.
After a thorough dive search, the vehicle was identified as a Chevrolet Impala from the 1960s.
Inside the Impala, investigators found skeletal remains consistent with an adult and a small child.
The police confirmed the discovery and said they found toys, clothing, and shoes among the items in the vehicle.
NBC6 captured the dramatic moment when the vehicle was lifted from the canal in cellphone footage.
The discovery has left local residents on edge.
Piedad Caballero, who lives nearby, expressed her concern after the Sunshine State Sonar team visited her on Saturday.
They sought permission to access the canal from her property.
"We’ve been here 20 years and we’ve been sleeping with dead bodies there over 20 years, not knowing.
Who knows how many more are in there?” Caballero told NBC6, her voice tinged with fear. "It's really scary."
