In an incident back in June, a man committed a violent robbery, stealing an expensive Ј80,000 watch and causing harm to a baby. Now, he's facing the consequences as he has been sentenced to four years in prison.
On Tuesday, September 18th, at Southwark Crown Court, Amine Benchoula, a 35-year-old man with no fixed address, received his sentence. This punishment stems from the robbery he committed and the assault on the baby during the incident.
Detective Sergeant Daniel Northcott, leading the investigation, expressed his concern about the heinous act. He emphasized that not only did Benchoula show no regard for the victim but also put the welfare of the victim's baby at risk.
The investigative team worked tirelessly to intensify the search for the suspect and gather substantial evidence.
The incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon, June 24th, around 4:40 PM, when the victim was with his family on St James's Square, SW1. As the victim was about to place his baby in the vehicle, Benchoula approached from behind, forcefully grabbed the victim's wrist, and attempted to steal his Ј80,000 Patek Philippe watch.
In the struggle, Benchoula knocked the baby out of the pram onto the pavement.
He fled the scene with the stolen watch, heading towards Waterloo Place/Pall Mall. Both the robbery victim and the baby suffered minor injuries, but fortunately, they did not sustain serious harm. The baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
CCTV footage captured the entire incident, and Benchoula's image was circulated, leading to his identification.
On Friday, July 9th, officers from the Violence Suppression Unit spotted him on Edgware Road and promptly arrested him. Remarkably, he was wearing the same distinctive tracksuit trousers, trainers, and baseball cap as during the robbery.
Regrettably, the stolen watch has not been recovered to date.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott from the Central West BCU highlighted the Met's commitment to addressing robbery issues and preventing such offenses from happening. They have increased patrols in robbery hotspots, actively identifying and apprehending potential offenders
