Mother of Murdered Son Expresses Relief After Alleged Killers - Girlfriend and Parents - Arrested

Exactly one year after the mysterious death of a 36-year-old man named Kirby Carpenter, his ex-girlfriend and her parents have been arrested and charged with capital murder.

Caitlin Spence, 37, was apprehended in Pennsylvania on the anniversary of Kirby's death, while her parents, Karen and Jeffrey Spence, were arrested in Virginia. This news brought both relief and pain to Kirby's mother, Mattie Jones.
"My knees hit the floor. I was hollering," Jones shared. "In our hearts and in ourselves, we knew who had done it. But now the world knows."

Jones believes that Caitlin was driven by greed and wanted Kirby's money. She claimed that valuables, including gold and silver, were missing from his house after his death.

Kirby's body was discovered outside his home several days after he was shot on November 30, 2022. It was Caitlin who initially alerted Jones about Kirby's absence, initially claiming he hadn't come home overnight, then later admitting it had been two days.

Jones rushed to his home only to find her son's body lying outside. "It was devastating. It is something that I live with every day, every morning, every night, 24/7," she said.

Prior to his death, Jones saw no red flags in their relationship. However, she noticed strange behavior from Caitlin afterwards, including changing locks on doors and safes, and showing no emotion.

Jones also mentioned that Caitlin had custody of Kirby's daughter, Enola, but refused contact with the family. Now, Jones is determined to gain custody of her granddaughter.

"We are trying, trying very hard. Yes, I am in the process and I am going to do everything I can to get Kirby's baby home and teach her the right kind of way to live. I can't imagine monsters raising my baby. The monsters took my son," she said.

Jones understands that talking to Enola about her father's death will be difficult, but she plans to raise her knowing and loving him.

While the motive for Kirby's murder remains unclear, Jones struggles to comprehend the act. "I cannot comprehend it simply because I don't have that kind of evil in my heart. I don't understand how it could even happen," she said.

Caitlin Spence has been extradited to Mississippi while her parents await extradition. All three face capital murder charges, which carry the death penalty in Mississippi.

While Jones believes justice should be served, she prefers that the perpetrators spend their lives in prison instead of facing execution.
